The seven-year wait is over. Nintendo has officially revealed its next consoleSwitch 2. Now that the reveal is done, after months of speculationWe can all move on to something else, right? Not so fast. The short introductory video created more questions than answers. There’s a lot we don’t know about Nintendo’s upcoming hybrid console, so let’s dive into it.
We don’t know! Nintendo has a Direct livestream scheduled for April 2, as far as we can tell. It will be sometime later, but in 2025. Maybe they will change quickly and plan to sell it at the end of April, but a summer release is possible. It is also possible for the company to wait until the start of the most profitable holiday. Folks will be able to play it soon, as is Nintendo doing solo events around the world in April to June.
This is another secret. The launch video just showed the outside of the console, along with the updated controls. There is no mention of internal specifications. Of course, there are many rumors about the power of Nintendo’s next console, but nothing is true. Some experts predict a console it will combine with eight-core Cortex-A78AE processor, 8GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage eMMC, while others say will be managed by Tegra239 SoC made by NVIDIA (system on a chip). Most people seem to agree that the system will include some of NVIDIA’s DLSS “deep learning supersampling” upscaling tech.
We’ve seen the screen in action, possibly running some of the upcoming Mario Kart games. The video gave us an idea of the scale of the show, as it looks 30 percent larger than the current model. This is accompanied by rumors of an 8-inch screen. However, we don’t know what type of display is included with the console. Rumors vary here. Some experts predict that a Mini-LED screenwhile others expect a traditional LCD. It probably won’t be OLED, as the company might save that for a future upgrade.
There are no reliable rumors about this, but there were speculations last year about the establishment of the company form of action and Switch 2. Nintendo tends to hit the sweet spot in the market, so I would be very surprised if the battery life is not comparable Change 4.5 hours of OLED to 9 of playing time for each price. The console will be more powerful than the OG Switch, of course, and bigger. The extra room can accommodate a cow battery.
This is another unknown. Nintendo may reveal pricing information on April 2. The original version started at $300, just like they did the Wii U. Rumors have been that the price can shoot up to $400or more than that. Nintendo tends to raise the base price every few generations. The GameCube originally cost $200 and the Wii was $250.
There have been long rumors that the Switch 2 it will include mouse-like functionality via the visual sensors on the Joy-Cons. We have no real confirmation on this, but the introductory video seems to imply this. Eagle-eyed viewers may have seen the episode featuring Pixar-like controllers moving around a table like, well, two computer mice. If true, Nintendo has created some wacky apps that combine mouse input with controllers. Anyway, this addition makes things like Development VI easy to play. It can also show a new one Mario Paint.
Viewers can also see a new button under the right Joy-Con. This was previously mentioned as the “C” button, but was not listed in the original video. We don’t know what it does, so your opinion is as good as ours. Perhaps it supports controllers or enables voice chat. We’ll find out on April 2.
Yes, the Switch 2 is backwards compatible with the original Switch games. This is exciting news, but the launch video noted that “some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” We don’t know exactly what that means or how many positions it will affect. It’s a fair bet that it refers to some of the old generation nonsense, like Nintendo Labo or Mario Kart: Home Circuit.
We’ll have to wait and see then, but the reveal video took some time to show the fun in action in a circular motion. The latest releases have shown that Nintendo has learned its lesson about stick-drift with the new console will include Hall effect joysticks. We certainly hope so.
The Switch’s user interface, for better or for worse, is very minimal and bare-bones. This extends to online shopping. We don’t know if Switch 2 will include Nintendo’s problems when it comes to the UI. My hope is that it will bring its own Miiverse is long forgotten. It was silly and fun. Today’s social media apps are a lot of things, but I wouldn’t exactly calling them silly or fun.
From the title-inducing 3DS to the title-inducing Virtual Boy, Nintendo has always marched to the beat of its own drum. The Switch 2, however, appears to be a regular release for the company. It’s a powerful and slightly larger Switch.
Will there be a Nintendo surprise that saved the company in the Wii years and ruined it in the Wii U era? We don’t know yet. It is possible that the aforementioned optical sensors or the “C” button could bring about wild and sporty experiences. It is also possible that there are other things that will be announced. This is Nintendo we’re talking about here.
This is not at all known, although fans hoping for a new Mario Kart were impressed by the reveal video. It also included visuals that looked like a new, complete Mario Kart modified design and the possibility of 24-person races.
