Newcastle manager Eddie Howe says he doesn’t have the money to make a big signing this month and winger Miguel Almiron could leave the club.
Newcastle have not made a major signing since the £32m Tino Livramento arrived from Southampton in August 2023 and missed out on Marco Guehi last summer.
With the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules still a headache for clubs, Howe says meeting the spending restrictions that forced them to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh remains a challenge.
Almiron is the latest player to be linked with a move to MLS this month.

Howe said: “Nobody wants to lose any players from our current squad, especially in positions where we are a bit fragile. Why would we want to leave ourselves in that position?
“But when you’re armed with all the facts, sometimes you have to take that short-term pain.
“I don’t know if this summer will be different and suddenly the outlook changes completely. I think that’s another day. What I would say is that hopefully the future looks very different.
“There’s no money there waiting to be spent, it’s all about June 30 and making sure you follow the rules by that date. Obviously, if you spend money, you have to make it up later.”
Meanwhile, Howe and his players will be solely focused on the task of trying to secure a club-record 10th successive victory when they face his former side Bournemouth on Saturday.
Fabian Schar is questionable due to illness, while goalkeeper Nick Pope is close to returning.
