House Republicans are seeking new limits on food stamps pushed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s mission. of “Making America Healthy Again.”
Rep. Josh Brecheen, R-Oklahoma, is spearheading “The Healthy SNAP Act.” cut out most junk food to be eligible for purchase under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), he first told Fox News Digital.
“President Trump has received a mandate from the majority of Americans to make America healthy again, and those in his administration, including RFK Jr. and Sen. Marco Rubio, have directly advocated for eliminating buyouts of junk food with SNAP,” Brecheen told Fox News. Digital.
“If someone wants to buy junk food on their own, that’s up to them. But what we’re saying is don’t ask the taxpayer to pay for it and then also expect the taxpayer to pick up the tab for the resulting outcome. Consequences for the hello”.

Brecheen’s bill would ban the use food stamps to buy “soft drinks, candy, ice cream, prepared desserts such as cakes, pies, cookies, or similar products,” according to the legislative text obtained by Fox News Digital.
Seven Republicans have supported the legislation as co-sponsors.
As the Oklahoma Republican noted, Secretary of State candidate Rubio supported efforts to reform SNAP last year.
He introduced a bipartisan bill with Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., to allow the federal government to collect more data on SNAP purchases and “add improving nutrition security and diet quality to the statement of congressional policy for SNAP.”

Rubio had also called for a crackdown on SNAP funds going to junk food Wall Street Journal last year’s edition.
Brecheen said of his bill: “In addition to the obvious health improvements, this bill will also result in significant savings in taxpayer funds for programs like Medicaid, where about 1 in 4 Americans ( 79 million in total) are currently enrolled.”
“Federally funded health care for obesity and obesity-related diseases has reached $400 billion annually, according to the Joint Senate Economic Committee (JEC) report 2023. We cannot afford to go that way as a nation,” he said. .
Republicans taking a focus on nutrition and health is a marked shift from even a decade ago, when conservatives rejected former first lady Michelle Obama’s push to get more nutritious meals in schools.
