TikTok days in the US they may end soon. The program should be canceled on Sundays, unless a US buyer or Supreme Court they intervene.
Meanwhile, there’s another app from TikTok’s parent company ByteDance that’s making waves. Lemon8 Currently the most downloaded live app in the Apple App Store and has over 10 million downloads in the Google Play Store.
“Lemon8 is an app focused on the community powered by TikTok, where you can find and share facts on various topics such as beauty, fashion, travel, food, and more,” the translation of the app reads in both stores.
Here’s what you need to know about Lemon8.
Note: I reached out to ByteDance about this issue, and the company did not immediately respond.
Lemon8 is a video-sharing and photo-sharing platform that focuses on TikTok’s live streaming experience instead of Pinterest’s board-like experience. But what Lemon8 and TikTok have in common is the Follows and For You tabs to show you posts from creators you follow and install apps you think you might like.
The content of Lemon8 is divided into six sections, including a seventh page named Everything. Other tabs are Fashion, Beauty, Food, Goodness, A journey and At home. These tabs can be found at the top of your screen, and tapping into these tabs will show you your recommendations and preferences.
Posts can be a collection of photos like in Instagram, or videos like TikTok. Some designers add text to their photos to describe an item or item. Some will also include the price of the item in the quote.
Lemon8 is different from other apps in terms of content and delivery.
Lemon8 has a lot of advertising and marketing ideas. It’s hard to tell what is and isn’t supported, and this seems to be the norm across the board. TikTok also has support, but these are usually placed in the lower left corner.
There aren’t many memes or jokes on Lemon8 compared to other apps, either. You can find memes on Lemon8, but various hashtags related to “memes,” such as “funnymemes” and “catmemes,” have less than 1 million views (compared to hundreds of millions on Instagram). This may be because Lemon8 still operates in the US, but my suspicions with Lemon8 are not made of memes. It is intended to be a handbook to help you live a different life or beauty.
There are also many articles in Lemon8. For example, a description might include recipe instructions or a detailed description of an item of clothing. TikTok captions can have useful information, but captions are about connecting posts and hashtags to get more views and not adding new content to a TikTok post. Lemon8 uses captions in the same way as Instagram posts, but Lemon8 captions have one major difference from Instagram: templates.
Lemon8 allows you to use templates for your posts to help you organize quickly and give you an idea of what to write in your post. There are reference templates for fashion, shopping, beauty, food and travel.
Lemon8 reminds me of a mashup between magazines Martha Stewart Living, Muscle & Fitness and Travel + Leisure. You may find helpful tips in Lemon8 to help you achieve your decorating goals or find holiday inspiration, but they are strictly non-commercial.
The reaction to Lemon8 seems to be positive so far. One Creator of TikTok posted a video calling Lemon8 “Pinterest, but interactive.” Someone said Lemon8 and includes Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok.
However, this positivity can be falsely inflated. ZDNet reports that many of Lemon8’s TikTok posts have described the app with similar language, leading some to believe that ByteDance paid its creators.
And the claims of the creators of Lemon8 make this theory sound plausible. One Lemon8 producer said Inside that ByteDance paid them to post on the app. Two other Lemon8 developers showed Insider emails detailing how the app pays.
Lemon8 is free so even if you are a little curious you can download and try the app. Just be aware that the app’s posts are more like tutorial guides than memes to share, and most of the posts are more like advertisements.
ByteDancethe Chinese technology company that owns TikTok, also owns Lemon8. According to ZDNetByteDance is positioning Lemon8 as a competitor to Instagram as many users stop using, or abandon, the Meta app.
According to Wall Street JournalAn internal memo leaked from Meta revealed that Instagram’s influence is declining. The management of ByteDance can hope to improve on this by offering Instagram users another program in the form of Lemon8. And although Lemon8 was released worldwide in 2020, the recent growth of the program may show that ByteDance’s gamble is paying off.
More about Lemon8 Privacy Policy seems to be acceptable for social media. It says Lemon8 collects your personal and location information to provide you with a better experience on the app. Other information collected includes your IP address and browsing history. But another part of the app’s privacy may raise eyebrows.
“The personal information we collect from you may be stored on a server located outside of your country of residence,” the law reads. The company has servers all over the world, according to the policy, so your information can be stored in any of them.
This is different from how Lemon8’s sister app TikTok stores user information. The company maintains Information about US users in Oracle servers. TikTok CEO Shou Chew said that ByteDance’s employees in China may have access to it, but only with “security controls and formal authorization” under the guidance of the US security team.
