We’ve come a long way from Disney’s first time “only gay time” while the studio made a big deal of LeFou’s actions in his actions Beauty and the Beast– more in a a big offensive circlenow we are back at the Rat House cut LGBTQ+ issues outside of its media to appeal to caring parents. But now nearly eight years later, the star at the center of the former scandal is speaking out about how shocked he was to see Disney blow the whistle.
“I didn’t feel like LeFou was who the community expected him to be,” Josh Gad said of his role as LeFou in the film, writing in his new book. In God We Trust (via Entertainment Weekly). “I can’t imagine a Pride celebration honoring a ‘movie moment’ where a Disney villain dances with a man for half a second. I mean, if I were gay, I know I’d be pissed.”
And yet, that’s what Disney tried to do in 2017, when Beauty and the BeastDirector Bill Condon teased that the moment, when LeFou dances with his male partner during the film’s famous celebration, is a big part of Disney’s LGBTQ+ efforts. explain (now badly) such as “the only gay moment” in an interview with Condition. But according to Gadi, the moment had not been discussed as a deliberate moment, and was not meant to be seen as a mere nod.
“Because I was part of the side, I didn’t want to suddenly destroy the sexuality of this person who was not driving the film,” writes Gad. But the moment (as I have described it) seemed quite innocuous—a happy blink—and—you’ll miss—a little hit.”
Instead, Condon’s production at the time turned into a radio sensation, outraged at the thought of two men dancing together (something that had never been done in a Disney movie before) in a small stand-up set to be seen on the big screen. It would be the first time in the next few years, since Disney seems to have been able to say that it is doing its “famous gay character” in several media channels, such as the studio and its main agencies. they didn’t do anything and queer characters and their presence beyond this acceptable waste.
Gad finished explaining: “If the audience had said that it was a good time for people to have sex with the same sex, I would have been happy, but the second time we showed it and it seems that we appreciated it, we got really angry.”
When things change so much, it stays the same, even if Disney is calling hell and wrath to his own fearmore than anything else.
