How to chat with ChatGPT on your phone

ChatGPT has support for voice chat from the end of 2023but if you are new to OpenAI chatbot, knowing how to talk to it can be difficult because there are several ways to do it. In this guide, I will explain the main differences between the two types of ChatGPT expressions and how to use both.

What is ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode?

As of this writing, OpenAI offers two different ways to interact with ChatGPT using your voice: “Standard” and “Advanced.” The first one is available to all users, and is a user account . “Advanced,” meanwhile, has more restrictions.

As a free user, OpenAI offers a monthly preview of the tool. Company registration allows you to use Advanced Voice every day. OpenAI says that the daily limit is subject to change, but either way, the company promises to notify users 15 minutes before they need to use it. Pro users can use Advanced Voice as much as they want, as long as they do so in a “reasonable” way and follow the company’s policies.

Outside of that limitation, the main difference between the two models is the flexibility of the models that support them. On OpenAI, Advanced Voice is multi-modal, meaning it can process more than just text. Instead, this translates to Advanced Voice providing capabilities that are not possible with Standard Mode, which simply reads what you say on your phone. In addition to “hearing” your voice, ChatGPT in Advanced Voice can process video and images at the same time. It’s also possible to share with chatbots, making it easier to use the app on your phone.

In addition, OpenAI says Advanced Voice’s multi-modality means that ChatGPT can produce natural sounds and can handle silent speech.

How do you start chatting with ChatGPT?

As mentioned above, OpenAI offers two different ways to interact with ChatGPT using your voice. The steps below will show you how to access them on your iPhone or Android device.

First, you need to download the ChatGPT app (Android, iOS). The content described in this guide is not available through the ChatGPT integration provided by Apple through its AI suite.

To use Standard mode, click the microphone icon to the right of the Message bar. If you want to give the ChatGPT app access to your phone’s microphone, you can do so through its settings.

When ChatGPT starts recording your request, click the chatbot icon to start processing your query. If you want it to delete your input, click the x icon.

To use Advanced Mode, click the waveform icon to the right of the Message bar. Tap the microphone icon if you want to mute your phone’s microphone. You can exit Advanced Mode at any time by pressing the x icon.

How do you share a screenshot of your screen with ChatGPT while chatting?

If you want to share with ChatGPT or share a photo or video, click on the three dots icon and choose Split Screen, Upload a Photo or Take a Picture.

If you don’t see this option, upgrade to the latest ChatGPT software. You may also live in a country where OpenAI does not offer this feature. See below for more information.

How many voice options are there?

The first time you use Advanced Voice Mode, you will be asked to select a ChatGPT voice tone. Currently, OpenAI offers nine options. I’ve listed them below, along with each company’s policy.

If you want to change the ChatGPT password, follow these steps:

1. Bring back the side row by tapping two rows.

2. Open it Favorites menu by clicking the three-dot icon.

3. Scroll down and click Words.

4. Select the word you want ChatGPT to use.

You can also change the ChatGPT voice directly from Advanced Voice by clicking the slider icon.

Are there regional restrictions on Advanced Voice Mode?

Some features of Advanced Voice Mode are not available in all countries where OpenAI offers ChatGPT. In particular, the video, screen sharing and photo uploading capabilities OpenAI introduced in December are not available in the European Union, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
