Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Oklahoma, shouted Democratic senators “hypocritical” line of questioning from Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth during his confirmation hearing.
Hegseth, who President-elect Trump nominated to lead the Pentagon during his next administration, faced a series of intense questions from Democratic senators on the Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing on tuesday
“I think it’s so hypocritical of senators, especially on the other side, to talk about their qualifications,” Mullin said of his Democratic colleagues before beginning his line of questioning at Hegseth. “And yet your grades are no better.”

The Oklahoma Republican he later noted that Democrats were questioning Hegseth about claims, which he has denied, that the defense candidate showed up to work drunk.
Mullin responded to the claims about Hegseth’s character, charging that elected members of the Senate had previously appeared intoxicated to vote.

“Senator Kaine, or I guess it’s better to use the senator from Virginia, is starting to think about the fact that, what if you show up drunk to your job? How many senators have shown up drunk to vote late at night?” Mullin charged, prompting some audible laughter from the individuals in the room. “Have any of you asked them to resign from their jobs? And don’t tell me you didn’t see it because I know you did.”
The senator continued to yell at Democratic members as Hegseth underwent his third hour of questioning.
“And then how many senators do you know who got divorced for cheating on their wives? Did you ask them to resign? No,” Mullin said. “You guys make sure to make a big show of pointing out the hypocrisy because a man got it wrong, and you want to sit there and say he’s not qualified. Just kidding me. It’s so ridiculous that you hold yourself to this higher standard , you forget that you have a big plank in your eye.”

Before beginning his cross-examination, Mullin thanked Hegseth’s wife, Jennifer, for “loving him through this mistake.”
“The only reason I’m here and not in prison is because my wife loved me too. I’ve changed, but I’m not perfect,” he said.
