FDA Proposes Broad Limits on Nicotine in Cigarettes

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Wednesday released a sweeping proposal to try to make cigarettes less addictive by reducing the amount of nicotine they contain, an 11th-hour plan by the Biden administration that will take years to enact in effect, if it happens. at all

The women’s movement in the White House one last chance to try to regulate tobacco, having previously pledged to end a long-standing promise to ban menthol-flavored cigarettes.

The FDA in the proposal estimated that, if implemented, nicotine reduction would help nearly 13 million additional people quit smoking cigarettes within a year of implementation. The estimate would increase to an additional 19.5 million people within five years of implementation, the FDA said.

The proposal would limit nicotine to levels that “could no longer create and maintain this addiction among people who smoke,” the FDA said.

The rule was posted online Wednesday, but that’s just the start of a bureaucratic journey that anti-tobacco advocates fear the incoming Trump administration could derail.
