House Speaker Mike Johnson announced Tuesday that flags on the U.S. Capitol will be raised to full staff next Monday, Jan. 20, to commemorate President-elect Donald Trump inauguration
The move comes despite the official order by the party President Biden After former President Jimmy Carter died on December 29, flags across the country flew at half-mast for a 30-day period of mourning.
“On January 20, flags on the Capitol will fly at full staff to celebrate our country uniting behind the inauguration of our 47th president, Donald Trump. Flags will be lowered to half-staff again the following day to continue honoring President Jimmy Carter,” Johnson said in a statement.

Johnson is a great defender of Trump, and the president-elect’s recent endorsement helped Johnson diffuse opposition from some far-right Republicans to his re-election as speaker of the new Congress.

According to the US Flag Code, US flags will be flown at half-mast for a period of 30 days to mark the death of a current or former president, on federal government buildings, military installations and ships and at US embassies and other facilities around the world.

“No one wants to see this,” Trump argued. “No American can be happy about this. Let’s see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

The US flag code is non-binding, meaning Trump could technically overturn it once he is inaugurated as president.
The Associated Press observed a flag flying at full height Monday at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida.

The flag had been flying at half-staff but was raised in the days after Carter’s funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, and burial in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, both of which took place on Thursday.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Monday announced that flags at the state Capitol building in Austin and all state office buildings will also be raised to full staff next Monday to commemorate Trump’s inauguration.
