Potter hopes to “bond” with fans ahead of the first home game

New West Ham head coach Graham Potter is relying on the support of the fans to help them in their first home game.

The Hammers face a tough test against high-flying Fulham and are without several key players, including Niclas Fulkrug and Michail Antonio.

But the former Chelsea and Brighton boss believes that with the right atmosphere, the London Stadium can be a tough place for any team.

Speaking at his press conference, Potter said: “The most important thing is that the fans get behind the team and I have no doubts about that. As an away manager it was hard to come by so we need that connection with the fans and the supporters.

“We’re in the early stages of it, but hopefully the results and performances are good because that brings them with us.

“I can’t wait for the first home game tomorrow night.

“I think our fans know where we are with our journey. The result is ultimately the most important.

“We want to play the right way, but the points are helpful. If we could have both, it would be great.

The response and attitude of the players was really good. They are enthusiastic to try to connect with each other. It was a difficult period and we want to build together as a team.

“They go along with it.”

Potter’s first game in charge was a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Saturday.

The east London club took a 1-0 lead through Lucas Paqueta, but lost in the second half.

A win against Fulham will lift them above Manchester United and Tottenham in the Premier League table, at least temporarily.

But the Hammers will have to do it without some key faces.

Asked if he was tempted to enter the transfer market this month, Potter added: “Certainly there is a logical explanation for doing something (in this transfer window), but it’s not always that simple. I wouldn’t want to do something about it in this very complicated window.

“There are returning players so my focus is on how to make the team perform as well as possible.

“Sometimes in these situations you have to be creative and look at the attributes of your players.”
