A group of liberal activists in Colorado is warning the state’s sheriffs that they will be held personally accountable and sued if they cooperate with President-elect Trump’s mass deportation plans or with ICE officials in any way, including working to deport illegal immigrants.
In a letter to Colorado sheriffs signed by ACLU of Colorado Executive Director Deborah Richardson and Legal Director Tim MacDonald, the group warned of serious personal consequences for Colorado law enforcement officials if they comply with ICE requests, including ICE detainers, who they often prevent the agency from having to make dangerous arrests in public spaces.
The group likened Trump’s plans for mass deportations to Japanese internment camps in the 1940s and said helping law enforcement in those efforts could face personal legal penalties from tens of thousands of dollars.
MacDonald and Richardson warned Colorado sheriffs that “joining with ICE or other federal officials in massive immigration raids or using the power of your office to detain people only at the request of ICE will expose you and to his officers on personal responsibility”.
BLUE STATE RETURN ‘DEFUND POLICE’ $350 million after record homicides and violent gang takeovers
“Any Colorado law enforcement officer who causes the violation of a right protected by the Colorado Constitution is subject to liability for damages and attorneys’ fees, including potential personal liability of up to $25,000, and the your employer, defined to include the sheriff-elect, is generally obligated to satisfy the full amount of any uncollectible judgment,” the letter said.
The ACLU of Colorado also slammed the Aurora Police Department for working with ICE in December arrest more than a dozen immigrants in a violent home invasion and kidnapping incident linked to Venezuela gang Tren d’Aragua (TdA).

The gang members allegedly forced their way into the apartment of a Venezuelan immigrant couple at the Edge at Lowry Apartments in the The suburbs of Denver and bound, beat, stabbed and kidnapped the victims, leaving them hospitalized. The perpetrators also allegedly stole jewelry from the victims.
MacDonald said the Aurora Police Department’s crackdown on TdA-linked criminals “exceeded its authority under Colorado law” and that “this type of behavior causes harm and distress to a vulnerable community and runs the risk depriving residents of their rights guaranteed by the Colorado Constitution and state law.”

“We have taken legal action against law enforcement offices that violate Colorado law and, if necessary, we will do so again,” MacDonald said. “We stand ready to respond to violations of the civil rights of our neighbors and prevent constitutional violations of the rights of Colorado families and communities.”
Roger Hudson, a member of the Castle Pines, Colorado city council, responded to the letter, telling Fox News Digital that “I am disappointed that an organization whose sole purpose has been to defend the rights of Americans has elected now people who do not have citizenship, many of them, who are in our country illegally, for the rights of American taxpayers.”
“Colorado taxpayers are tired of working hard to foot the high bill for failed liberal policies, not just on immigration, but also housing, education, transportation, infrastructure and the economy ” he said, adding: “Change is coming soon and it starts with the inauguration of President Donald Trump.”
