12 Best Cat Water Fountains, AWIRED Tested and Reviewed (2025)

As it seems it is the rise of automatic litter boxes, only jewelry, tracking livestockand now the cat water fountain, technology has made it possible for us to keep an eye on our pets and make sure they are taken care of without much manual labor.

A cat water fountain encourages cats to drink more water, which contributes to their overall health. I have noticed an increase in my cat’s water intake since switching to a fountain. As a pet helicopter mom, I have always been a believer in spring.

While fountains alone are great for your cats to drink, they require a lot of work and money. Instead of filling the bowl, this takes less fat—but it’s important for your cat’s health. Along with the routine replenishment and cleaning, you must disassemble the spring to clean all parts, including the use of brush plates and tubes. You may also need to disassemble the engine for a more thorough cleaning because of the salt build-up. These also have different types of filter cartridges in the form of actual springs, which require you to purchase and replace filters, usually monthly or more frequently.

Many of these fountains also have an integrated app, which reminds you when to clean, change the filter, and refill. Many also track how often your pet drinks throughout the day, week, and month so you can track your pet’s habits and see any changes. A cat drinking more or less water than usual can be a good sign that there is a problem with their health.

I (and my cats) tested the different (and some technically advanced) automatic pet water fountains available right now to see which ones are worth the money.

Cats sometimes struggle to drink enough water, which can lead to dehydration UTI infection and blockages in male cats in particular. This is one of the reasons why vets are moving more and more to encourage owners to give their cats a slightly moist food, because this helps them to stay hydrated, especially since cats don’t drink as much water as dogs. Unlike dogs, cats are very particular about their likes and dislikes, and cats can find stagnant water to be dangerous. (If the cat was in the wild, stagnant water has the potential to kill harmful bacteria). Cats are very attracted to natural moving water, and spraying them helps them to drink more based on what they are attracted to.

In fact, many of these springs are very similar. I looked mainly at the design – I’m a fan of stainless steel because of the possibility of a plastic hole harmful bacteria. I also like a large container with no raised sides to help reduce access beard fatigue. I like fountains that have a small reservoir that is always available, in case of low water or power outages. I thought about the ease of installation, refilling, and cleaning, as well as the design. And, of course, there were some that my cats took to immediately, and others that didn’t seem to like them very much.

I used all of these for a week as the main source of water for my cats. As mentioned, I saw the ease of installation, tested parts and filters, and compared different types of water fountains – spigot, bubbling, or waterfall. Some discharges were constant and others were intermittent (my cats didn’t like the fluctuations). Cats can also be curious and want to play with the machine instead of drinking it, so make sure you give them time and keep some water around until they are completely adjusted to the new device.
