Player ratings as Magpies rally after early scare

Newcastle United booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup by beating Bromley 3-1 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies were riding high heading into this tie and the Toon Army must have thought they would enjoy a quiet afternoon. Newcastle’s stellar form saw them finish fifth in the Premier League tableand they recently made a big leap towards the Carabao Cup final by beating Arsenal 2-0 away.

However, Eddie Howe’s side were quickly brought back down to earth by the League 2 side. The manager’s heavily rotated XI were stunned in the opening stages. Cameron Congreve achieved what the Gunners failed to do in midweek by breaking through Martin Dubravka’s defense with a neat curling strike from distance.

It didn’t take long to Premier League though to restore parity with Lewis Miley, who has barely featured this season after returning from a long-term injury, equalizing with Newcastle’s home goal.

The home team took full control from then on and should have taken the lead through William Osula immediately after Miley’s equaliser. NewcastleTheir dominance for the rest of the first half came as no surprise as they had 86% of the ball, but Bromley were stubborn enough to go into the break at 1-1.

There was no messing around from Howe at the start of the second half as Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes entered the fray, the former coolly slotting home a penalty from 12 yards to give Newcastle their first lead in the cup tie three minutes from time.

Osula, on a rare outing after arriving in the summer, added a third for the hosts with a brace – his first for the club. Newcastle’s second-half comfort allowed Howe to add 17-year-old Trevan Sanusi to the proceedings for his competitive debut, and the Magpies maintained their two-goal lead with little trouble late on.
