Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his dismay after his side’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United – and said Gabriel Jesus’ injury “doesn’t look good”.
The Gunners had more than 70% possession and 26 of 33 shots between the teams in the third round Premier League meeting at the Emirates Stadium, only to be awarded penalties after a 1-1 draw with 10 men.
“I love my players and I couldn’t be prouder because it’s very difficult to ask for anything other than the performance they give,” Arteta told BBC Sport, calling his squad “amazing”.
“I like how good they are and what they’re doing because in 1,000 games (like this), you should lose one and (on this occasion) it was this one.
“It’s unbelievable. We deserved to win by a margin, but the reality is that we were relegated. The only thing that will be judged is that.”
All square! The momentum of this one changed very quickly.

Bruno Fernandes put the visitors ahead in the 52nd minute before Gabriel equalized two minutes after Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second yellow card.
Martin Odegaard then saved a spot-kick during the second half of normal time as part of an outstanding performance from United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who also denied Declan Rice.
Arsenal striker Kai Havertz became the only player to miss a shot when Turkey international Bayindir pushed his shot wide of the post.
“That’s football… you need things the way you want them and tonight it wasn’t,” condemned Arteta. “When you go to penalties, you know it’s a coin toss and it can go either way.”
Joshua Zirkzee keeps calm and sends Manchester United to the next round! What a drama!

Arteta’s side are without a win in three games in all competitions, losing 2-0 at home to Newcastle in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final five days ago.
It looks like Jesus won’t be able to help them return to form in the near future after being replaced by Raheem Sterling after 40 minutes against United.
The Brazilian forward missed 16 games last season with knee and hamstring injuries and had knee surgery during the 2022/23 season.
“No update, but it doesn’t look good,” Arteta said of the 27-year-old. “He was in a lot of pain. He had to go out on a stretcher and he doesn’t look good.”
