Actor and film director Mel Gibson said Thursday that his Malibu home has been destroyed for forest fires in the Los Angeles area, calling the experience “devastating.”
“It’s emotional,” Gibson told “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” in an interview. “I had my things there. They have relieved me of the burden of my things because everything is in ashes.”
Gibson also noted that he was in Austin, Texas, appearing The Joe Rogan Podcast when he heard that the fire had broken out. He says that while he was talking to Rogan, he was “badly at ease” because he had heard his neighborhood was on fire
“I thought, ‘Hey, I wonder if my place is still there,'” he said. “When I got home, sure enough it wasn’t there.”
Gibson added that it surprised him damage intensity and by what seemed to be the randomness of which houses were destroyed in their neighborhood.
“(The area) was completely roasted. I’ve never seen such a complete burn,” Gibson told Vargas, saying he’s not sure if he’ll rebuild there, but was grateful for the generosity of those who live nearby and the fact that the his family was safe.
As of Thursday afternoon, the Los Angeles wildfires they have burned nearly 29,000 hectares, destroyed thousands of structures and forced nearly 180,000 people to evacuate their homes. At least 10 have also died as a result of the flames.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has done just that been under pressure in recent days as multiple wildfires ravaged the Golden State. Much of the scrutiny is focused on regulations in the state that are limiting the amount of water that can be used from the nearby delta as hydrants are running out of water and the fires remain largely uncontained.
Gibson and Rogan, as a couple comments of President-elect Trump, have also criticized the governor over the issue during the recent episode.
