The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said it arrested a suspect on Thursday accused of causing the Kenneth Fire.
LAPD Senior Senior Officer Charles Dinse noted that the fire started around 3 p.m. Thursday in the West Hills neighborhood. It is being investigated as a crime.
“What we know right now is that the incident happened, it started here,” Dinse said he said in an interview with NewsNation’s Brian Entin. “And about 20 minutes, 30 minutes later, a suspect was apprehended by citizens in the Woodland Hills area.”
He added that investigators currently do not know the individual’s motive for starting the fire that has spread 900 miles across the Golden State. Citizens helped arrest the suspect.
Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman a separate interview with NewsNation, said the penalty could be as high as a manslaughter charge, which could result in life in prison.
“Justice will be swift,” Hochman told NewsNation’s Ashleigh Banfield on Thursday. “He will be firm and the maximum punishment will be sought.”
“Our goal is to send that warning. Whether it’s a looting, these Internet scams, thefts or future house fires,” he continued, adding that “the day and age of the office of a prosecutor on the sidelines. We want to do justice and we will do it.”
His comments come like wildfire continue to sweep the region
Officials have issued evacuation orders for 180,000 people and said at least 10 have died as a result of the flames. More than 35,000 hectares have burned in recent days.
