Enzo Maresca clarifies Wesley Fofana’s injury schedule after dispute

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has decided to end the confusion surrounding centre-back Wesley Fofana’s latest title injury.

Fofana went down with a hamstring injury in early December, which he immediately described as “a mild warning” and “nothing serious”, but after a month on the sidelines, Maresca publicly revealed that there was a chance that the 24-year-old could be out for the rest of the season.

The Italian’s statement is alleged met with confusion from Fofanawho reportedly claimed on social media that Maresca’s comments were simply “not true.” Quotes attributed to Fofana mention a time frame of between four and six weeks.

Asked about the dispute, Maresca admitted that Fofana did not agree with it Chelsea medical staff diagnosis.

“We speak the same language in the sense that we communicate with each other in English and French, so it was very clear,” he said. “I spoke to Wes – the 12 to 16 weeks the club mentioned is the situation.

“Wes thinks he can recover sooner. We’re all happy if Wes recovers and will be available tomorrow, but we’ll see.

“There’s no problem, I just told you what the medical staff told me, which is around 12 to 16 weeks. Wes thinks he can recover earlier than that. We’re all happy if Wes comes back as soon as possible.”

Concerns over Fofana’s availability fueled speculation about re-sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. On-loan Trevoh Chalobah, who is also with the Eagles, could be called upon to add more numbers.

“The only thing I can say is that Marc Guehi is a Palace player,” Maresca emphasized. “For sure I like Marc, but he is not our player. But I also like the central defenders we have. I also like the different types of central defenders in Italy, Spain and France, but that does not mean we will buy a player.

“I think it’s a normal situation when you have injured centre-backs to speculate. At the same time, there’s nothing there.

“(The situation with Chalobah) is exactly the same. Unfortunately, I have to give you the same answer. Trev is a good player, but at the moment he is a Palace player, so we will see.”
