Let’s be honest: Most low-sodium diets aren’t great, which makes it difficult for many of us to make the switch to cut back. high blood pressure and escape heart attack. Between electronic devices and new technology at CES could be a solution to this problem.
The Kirin Electric Salt Spoon can make your food taste salty without the added sodium drop. It was one of the most popular products at CES this year and took the place of the most amazing technology in our industry. List of CES awards.
The device sends electricity from the spoon to your tongue to taste the salt. Trust me, you’re not the only one who thinks that electricity and tongues often don’t mix. Fortunately, it is a weak power source.
The Kirin Electric Salt Spoon comes in two pieces: the spoon and the detachable handle, which has all the technical features. The handle has menu buttons for changing the four salt levels. The spoon is very nice in the hand, although it is not surprising with batteries and electronics inside.
Although the idea is cool, we have to admit that when we tested the Kirin Electric Salt Spoon, we thought it was… OK. A good way to describe the change in taste of the sauce offered at the show was that it tasted “fuller” as the price went. The difference in taste was slightly noticeable between the strengths. Kirin notes in the release that the experience will vary from person to person and the feeling may be different depending on the food.
Spoon does what it says, although the instant activation may feel like it’s making the stars align with others. The handle is thick, with sensors on the back of the spoon that you have to touch to activate. Depending on your skill, you may need to wrap your fist around it, similar to how a small child would do. On the part of the spoon, there is a separate sensor that the food needs to touch in order to receive more salt. The handle has a blue light under the button that turns white when ready. If the food leaves the sensor in the spoon, you lose the current and your food is not salty.
Touching the sensors on the back of the handle and moving the food to the right place on the spoon to activate the technology can be an interaction that gets old quickly.

The Kirin Electric Salt Spoon is an interesting concept that has the important function of reducing sodium intake. I could see this spoon moving the needle in a beneficial direction for people who need to reduce their sodium intake for health reasons. When we tried the spoon, it enhanced the flavor of the soup as described. However, I wouldn’t put money on a spoon just yet. The steps for it to work are complex, and we can’t say whether the placebo effect can occur to some extent.
The Kirin Electric Salt Spoon is available in Japan and should be available in North America this year. It will cost about $125, which would be hard to justify for a spoon. Kirin says people who use pacemakers or other medical devices should not use his spoon.
