VLC downloads 6 billion, with AI-generated subtitle preview

VLC media player, the popular open source software developed by the non-profit VideoLAN, has been downloaded 6 billion times worldwide and makes fun of the little AI machine.

The innovation creates real-time subtitles – which can also be translated into many languages - for every video using open AI models that run locally on the user’s device, eliminating the need for an Internet connection or cloud services, VideoLAN was shown at CES.

The company did not say when it plans to release the feature.

VideoLAN started in 1996 as a student project at the Ecole Centrale Paris to try to move video to all schools. Unlike many open source projects that have struggled to survive on offerings alone, VLC has maintained its free, ad-free version as it expands to multiple operating systems. Media players continue to operate without advertising, data collection, or commercial revenue streams.

“The number of VLC users is growing, even in our gaming age,” VideoLAN President Jean-Baptiste Kempf he wrote in a LinkedIn post.
