President-elect Donald Trump is following through on his push to make Canada 51st US state.
“Canada and the United States. That would be something,” Trump said Tuesday at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. “They should be a state.”
Trump stressed that if Canada were to join the US, it would not be through the use of military force but through “economic force”.
A day earlier, the president-elect argued in a social media post that “a lot of people in Canada LOVE being the 51st state.”
Trump emphasized that “if Canada were to merge with the USA, there would be no tariffs, taxes would be greatly lowered, and they would be TOTALLY secured from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great nation they would. be!!!”
WHAT TRUMP SAYS ABOUT CANADA BECOMING THE 51ST STATE
In recent weeks, the former and now president-elect has trolled the US’s neighbor to the north, thinking it would become the 51st state, posting a doctored photo of him standing next to a Canadian flag above of a mountain
Also, his recent mocking of the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Repeatedly referring to him as “the governor,” along with his threat to impose massive tariffs on Canada, was likely a contributing factor to Trudeau’s resignation announcement this week.
Trump’s fixation with Canada comes as he also ramps up his calls for Denmark to sell the sparsely populated but massive North Atlantic island of Greenland to the United States.
However, what if the unlikely expansionist scenario of Canada came together the usa did it really come to fruition?
Hypothetically, it could be a huge political boon for Democrats at the expense of Republicans.
Canada’s modern political history points to the left.
“The Liberals have been in charge of the Canadian federal government for most of the time since World War II,” Republican strategist Dave Carney noted on Fox News.
Voters who support these governments are likely to vote for the Democrats over the Republicans if Canada became the 51st state.
With a population of just over 40 million, Canada would become the most populous state in the United States, beating the blue state of California for the honors.
Canada’s addition to the US as the country’s largest state could give Democrats a big boost in the battle for congressional majorities and electoral vote counts in presidential elections.
Rich Lowry, editor-in-chief of the prominent conservative magazine National Review, warned in an op-ed for the New York Post that “Canada would be a blue-state giant, matching the population of California … and presumably , in a reliable democratic policy.”
“We might think we’d annex Canada and it would be more like us, but with two Democratic senators and a large stretch of electoral votes for Democratic presidential candidates, Canada would certainly become more like us,” Lowry predicted.
Veteran political scientist Wayne Lesperance agreed, noting that “Canada as a state would bring millions of voters more likely to align themselves with the Democrats’ agenda and ideology. And with 40 million voters, the new state 51 would be the largest state in the union with a congressional delegation far more likely to oppose Trump and his party’s political agenda.”
Lesperance, president of New England College, based in New Hampshire, said that if Trump “is serious and comes up with a proposal, I would expect a lot of support for his initiative … especially from Democrats.”
Democratic strategist and political analyst Van Jones said on CNN that Canada would be “a great blue state” and that “if Canada wants to come here and bail us out, I’m more than happy.”

However, Carney, who noted that the likelihood of Canada joining the US is extremely slim, said it is a great negotiating strategy by Trump when it comes to negotiations with America’s northern neighbor.
“He has the ability to use tools that no one would have ever thought of,” Carney said. “He has the ability and willingness to use all the tools in his toolbox.”
Carney, the top political adviser to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and a veteran of numerous Republican presidential campaigns, added that Trump “uses the soft power of the presidency to make people pay attention and get what they want.”
