Indian cricket is currently in turmoil following the team’s humiliating 1-3 Test series loss to Australia, which marked their first defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in a decade. With a string of defeats, including a home loss to New Zealand just before the Australian tour, the stakes were high for Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
While Ravichandran Ashwin, the ace off-spinner and reliable all-rounder, made a shock retirement from international cricket in the midst of the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. in Australia and returned home the next day, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma endured a torrid run with the bat in the five-match Test series Down Under.
Now, India’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, is all set to meet captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI officials to review Team India’s dismal performance in the tour of Australia. The review comes amid growing concerns over the form and future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
A Hindustan Times report claims that the Indian selectors will also address the anger among Indian fans over Kohli and Rohit’s struggles in Test cricket and what lies ahead. The loss in the BGT 2024-25 series not only ended India’s hopes of reaching the 2025 WTC final but also raised serious questions about the team’s leadership and chemistry.
Adding to the controversy, the unexpected retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin in the middle of the series, along with rumblings of unrest within the team, has only fueled speculations about the internal dynamics of the team and the upcoming meeting will also address these dramas. The report claims that Ravichandran Ashwin’s shock retirement will be discussed at the meeting.
Rohit’s dramatic dip in form, which saw him benched for the Sydney Test, and Kohli’s continued poor spell have fans and pundits questioning his future in the longest format of the game. It is also said that a series of intense meetings are expected in the coming days to discuss these pressing issues, including Ravichandran Ashwin’s shock move.
A Hindustan Times report reads: “The Australian tour, which came on the heels of a 0-3 loss at home to New Zealand, was expected to decide the fate of many senior players. A 3-1 defeat shut the door on India’s WTC finals hopes, seen as a major setback.
“R Ashwin’s mid-tour retirement and homecoming, murmurs of discontent from the touring team, Rohit’s free fall in form which resulted in him sitting out the final Test in Sydney, and Virat Kohli’s prolonged lackluster run have left Indian cricket facing several burning questions that will likely be addressed in a number of formal and informal meetings between selectors and administrators in the coming days.”
Meanwhile, Ajit Agarkar is currently in Vadodara to attend the knockout round of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. Agarkar will meet the other members of the selection committee to discuss and brief them on the team’s performance.
The chief selector will then meet head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma to review India’s performance in the Australian tour. Namely, the BCCI will hold a special general meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on Sunday, January 12, where Devajit Saikia will take over as the new BCCI secretary.
