Barcelona to the final of the Spanish Super Cup after seeing off Athletic Club

Barcelona advanced to the final of the Spanish Super Cup after beating Athletic Club 2-0 at the King Abdullah Sport City in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

Goals from Gavi and Lamine Yamal secured Barca’s place in Sunday’s final, while Athletic had two goals disallowed for offside in the final ten minutes.

The Catalan club were encouraged by the news before kick-off that players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor had been granted provisional registration to play by the Spanish Sports Council, Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD).

Manager Hansi Flick called the ruling “the right decision” and his side started brightly in Jeddah, with Gavi opening the scoring just after quarter of an hour.

Athletic got into the game but Flick’s side doubled their lead shortly after the break when Yamal scored to put Barcelona in the lead.

Bilbao looked to have pulled a goal back through Oscar de Marcos in the 82nd minute, but the goal was disallowed due to the backline.

Four minutes later, Inaki Williams latched on to Frenkie de Jong’s wayward last pass to find the post, but again that effort was ruled out by VAR.

Barcelona will find out their opponents for Sunday’s clash, also at the King Abdullah Sport City, on Thursday when Real Madrid take on Mallorca.
