We can no longer be at the height of a small housebut the idea of a light, well-built house that can be bolted anywhere is still appealing. Today at CESI got to visit the 2025 model of the microhaus Pro from California-based Haus.me. It was shiny, smartly chosen and, honestly, not as expensive as I thought.
The 120-square-foot interior is all wood, glass and neutral tones. It’s as if you took a shipping container and replaced the hard lines with corrugated iron and rounded corners and floor-to-ceiling windows. The layout is bright and every part of the space is enhanced by Ikea-like small spaces, such as the Murphy queen bed that folds to reveal a table and two bench seats. The kitchen has a small fridge, microwave and is included in the price with a complete Villeroy & Boch dishware and there is a full bath shower.
The units can go anywhere without preparing the ground – if the ground is flat, it will work. Microhaus Pro is weatherproof, able to settle in snowy forests, hot deserts and warm beaches (although the hot and cold package is about $10.00 extra each). They are also California’s firefighting earthquakes and are classified as CAT-5 hurricanes.
Installation takes less than an hour and requires no special equipment – a garden hose and extension cord are all that’s needed. And because of its size, it falls below the size limit that would require a permit. The included 3.6 kWh battery can power everything in the house for four days and there’s room for improvement releasing water into the atmosphere and a battery life of four days. Drinking water with reverse osmosis is filtered and the sewage system “dissolves” everything into water, which can be discharged through an extension pipe that you can connect to a septic or storage tank.
The Pro version also features advanced features such as voice control via the wall-mounted Apple HomePod. During my visit, Max Gerbut, CEO of Haus.me asked Siri to reduce the shadows, and she obeyed. You also get a full package, plates, towels et cetera – I saw a drawer full of M&Ms in the kitchen and I was assured you would get it too.
The Pro version is sleeker and more robust designed for Airbnb and rental use and costs $89.99. If you don’t want the smart home features, battery backup and dishes included, you can pick up the Microhaus Lite for $59,990. There is also a $35,000 package that only includes HVAC, electrical, wiring, plumbing and plumbing.
One thing that none of the microhouse models include is solar generation. For these reasons, you should change up to 400 and 800 square-foot units. Those with the option to install anywhere but are independent and go for $199,000 and $299,000 respectively. Note that none of the prices include shipping.
It’s true – none of these prices are small numbers. But I have helped build small houses, small houses and sheds. I have lived in a number of handmade houses and have explored many other methods of weaving. In comparison, these prices are not very high, especially when you consider that there is no preparation area, no installation and no contractor required.
