Today is the most hopeful and optimistic day of the year.
That’s great!
No matter what goals or resolutions you set for yourself, I’m excited for you!
We are all trying to better ourselves, and even though things haven’t gone the way we wanted in the past, we hope this time will vary.
Musician Nick Cave describes hope as “optimism with a broken heart,” and I think that’s pretty accurate. When change is so hard, we all strive to be different.
If you’re looking to develop a new exercise habit or change the number on the scale this year, I salute you. Setting a goal to change is highly commendable.
But to give ourselves the best chance of achieving our goals, we must combine our goals with some self-reflection and self-awareness.
As 2025 begins, there are two questions I want to ask myself…
I’m so proud of you for starting over.
But what’s different about this attempt?
If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always had.
The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.
If you choose the same goal or strategy that you have tried (unsuccessfully) in the past, the end result will be the same: another year of “why can’t I snap out of it?” failure.
So, think carefully about what’s different this time!
Don’t just “go on the XYZ diet” or “give up all sugar forever” or “train for a marathon,” especially if you’ve tried these methods before and couldn’t stick with them.
This time it must be different:
Prove to yourself that you’ve learned something from your past attempts. Don’t let past failures be in vain – they show you what doesn’t work for you.
Try something different this time!
You’re motivated now, and that’s great.
But in three weeks, life is going to happen and things will go wrong.
What has been your tendency when this has happened in the past?
We ask everyone NumberNF Coach ClientNumber Before they start, “What are you most nervous about?”
They knew the answer from past attempts:
Do you get busy and decide to “take a break until things slow down”? Great! Now you know when that little voice in your head says this, you can prepare for it, plan to do something different and then decide not to have Listen to the voices in your head.
Do you have a bad day and get completely derailed? Great! Now you know that when you have a bad day, you can forgive yourself instead of looking back with anger or guilt and get back on track.
Even if you really wanted to keep going, would you give up? Great! It happens to all of us when motivation wanes after a few weeks. consider NumberAdded Ulysses ContractNumber Guard against your weaknesses or make a bet with a friend to hold you accountable.
NF coach Matt Myers recently NumberThe Mental Golf Podcast with Josh NicholsNumber – At the 24:30 mark of the episode, Matt points out something to Josh that surprises him:
“You told me before you started, ‘I know I’m going to work my way out of the door, but in about three weeks, I’m going to burn out and disappear.’
I say, ‘Thanks for letting me know’ and I have all these alerts and alerts ready to check back with you in the 21 days or so!
Josh had the self-awareness to know where he would mess up in the future, and he and Coach Matt planned for it and got through it together.
They’ve been working together for two months since then (and counting) and Josh has only missed one day of check-in, and missing a day didn’t cause Josh’s normal “all or nothing” behavior to kick in!
We all begin to change, even if we are self-aware…
We often bite off more than we can chew:
Our goals and hopes often exceed reality because we are fallible, busy, complex human beings living unpredictable lives.
It doesn’t matter!
If we were aware of these things, if we could try a different approach…then even this Next If that doesn’t work, we can remove the strategy from the list of potential successful paths and try again.
Anyway, that’s what life is all about: trying, failing, adjusting, starting over.
