CNN political commentator Van Jones weighed in on President-elect Trump idea of launching Canada to become the 51st state, claiming that if it happens, America’s northern neighbor would be a “huge blue state.”
“I don’t understand why anyone is mad at Trump for this,” the pundit said Monday on CNN’s “NewsNight.”
“If Trump, I mean it. If Trump wants Canada to become the 51st (state), it would be a big blue state,” he told the panel.
Conservative commentator Scott Jennings seemed to agree with him, saying he would retract his “earlier statement” on the matter.
“Exactly. Like, I don’t think Trump thought it through,” continued Jones, who previously served as an adviser to former President Obama. “First of all, it would be wonderful to have a massive blue state.”
“They have an incredible healthcare system,” he added. “It would be wonderful for us, listen, if he, if Canada wants to come here and rescue us, I’m more than happy.”
Discussion of the issue came just hours after Trump proposed the idea of fusion the US and Canada into one nation shortly after the country’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau announced his resignationa publication that has held for nine years. If it happened hypothetically, tariffs between the two American countries would be reduced, according to the president-elect.
“If Canada merged with the US, there would be no tariffs, taxes would be way down, and they would be TOTALLY insured from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships constantly surrounding them,” Trump told Truth Social on Monday. “Together, what a great nation we would be!!!”
Trump threatened Canada with a tariff hike last year would slap a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from the country if it does not strengthen border security and curb the flow of fentanyl entering the US from the northern border. Trudeau he said tariffs would complicate cooperation between the two nations.
The president-elect has done it too trolled Trudeau following his delay November meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, calling the leader of the Liberal Party the “governor” of Canada.
Canada will have a general election later this year.
