President-elect Trump stepped up his calls for the US to agree owned by Greenland in a hilarious social media post on Monday.
The move comes as the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., prepares to travel to Greenland on Tuesday. The trip will be in a personal capacity and he is not expected to meet with government officials.
In a Truth Social post, President-elect Trump said he was “hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA’.” The Republican attached a video purportedly showing a Greenlander asking the US to buy his country.
“If you could say anything to Trump, what would it be?” a woman is heard asking the man in the video.
“Buy us. Buy Greenland,” replied the man, wearing a MAGA hat.
The Greenlander then added that he “loved the Americans” and wanted to break free from the Danish government.
“We no longer want to be colonized by the Danish government,” he explained. “They cheat us every year (with) our Greenland minerals. We are the richest nation in the world. And we can’t use it. Denmark uses us too much.”
In his message, Trump confirmed it plans to visit Greenland in the near future and that his son, Donald Trump, Jr., will be in the country soon. The president-elect said he plans to see some of the island’s “most magnificent areas and sights.”
“Greenland is an amazing place and the people will benefit greatly if and when it becomes part of our nation,” Trump wrote Monday. “We will protect her, and love her, from a very vicious outside world. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump’s latest post comes two weeks after he first made headlines expressing his support for US ownership of Greenland.
“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the world, the ownership and control of Greenland is deemed by the United States of America to be an absolute necessity,” the president-elect’s Social Truth post read.
In response, the Prime Minister of Greenland Mute Egede he declared his country’s interest in becoming independent from Denmark.
“The next new electoral period must create, together with the public, these new steps, based on the bases that have already been created”, said Egede. “It is time for us to step up ourselves and shape our future, also in terms of who we will cooperate closely with and who our business partners will be.”
Trump has been considering buying Greenland for several years. In 2019, he floated the idea of buying Greenland, calling it “a great real estate deal.”
“A lot of things can be done. It’s hurting Denmark a lot because they’re losing almost $700 million a year carrying it,” Trump said at the time. “So they’re taking it at a great loss, and strategically for the United States, it would be good. And we’re a great ally of Denmark and we help Denmark and we protect Denmark.”
During a “Fox News Sunday” interview about Trump’s remarks, then-White House chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow confirmed the president’s sentiment was genuine.
“Greenland is a strategic place up there and they have a lot of valuable minerals,” Kudlow explained at the time.

“I don’t want to predict an outcome. I’m just saying the president, who knows a thing or two about buying real estate, wants to take a look.”
