Sources in Mexico tell NewsNation that a caravan of migrants has just taken off from the city of Tapachula, with hundreds of people heading north to Chiapas, Mexico on foot.
Most of the migrants are Venezuelans, according to sources. The final destination is Juárez, Mexico, located a few kilometers from the border, and El Paso, Texas.
It is the 10th caravan of this type that has formed in the southern municipality since October.
according to Mexican immigration authoritiesthey expect even more of these caravans to form and leave in the coming days before President-elect Trump takes office.
Trump and histsar of the border“, Tom Homan, have pledged to carry out mass deportations on a historic scale, censuring the sanctuary cities and their leaders who consider opposing these actions.
The chances of the caravan reaching the southern US border are slim to none as Mexican immigration authorities continue to step up their efforts to deter and prevent groups of migrants from even reaching the City of Mexico
Sources tell NewsNation authorities have dubbed this “Operation Carousel” and are breaking up groups of migrants and negotiating with them to travel to other Mexican states.
The Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has spoken issue of deportations ahead of Trump’s second term, making a striking reversal of previous policy promises.
Last month, Sheinbaum said Mexico would push the United States to send non-Mexican deportees to their countries of origin; now, he has announced that Mexico is open to accept foreigners.
The change in stance comes as the Mexican government promises to open up 25 new shelters to house deported migrants.
Immigration lawyer Rolando Vazquez, who mainly represents Venezuelan nationals, said these shelters will lead to self-deportation from Mexico
“These foreigners will find it more desirable to be in their country of origin than in Mexico, and eventually they will return to their country,” Vázquez said. “And that’s what we’ve seen in the past in the last Trump administration when they implemented the Program (Migrant Protection)..”
Sources in Tijuana and Matamoros tell NewsNation they expect migrants to rush to the border in the final days before Trump’s inauguration as they fear the CBP One application will end at this point.
