Does anyone want a cover? that light on their hand? That was my thought when I saw Samsung Display’s idea for a micro LED smartwatch on Cost of CES 2025. I wasn’t allowed to touch or interact with the concept of the watch, but I didn’t have to to understand why it’s so special. Even from a distance, I could see how the bright screen compares to a regular smartwatch, making the bright Las Vegas Sphere and street lights displayed on the watch stand out.
Screen uses Micro LEDa type of display technology that uses small LED particles to display images, which often results in better brightness. Samsung and other companies already use their technology televisionsbut the technology has not yet arrived Clothes. However, it was rumored that Apple had been working on a smaller display for the Apple Watch but abandoned it, according to Bloomberg.

The watch I saw at Samsung’s Display booth is just a concept, so it’s unclear if it will actually arrive in the future. Samsung Display and Samsung Electronics are separate groups; the former is a product display, while the latter is a consumer technology company. So just because Samsung Display has developed new display technologies doesn’t mean they’ve come up with new products, because most of these display types are expensive to produce at scale.
But back to the brilliance of this Samsung Display watch.
A label next to the watch shows that its brightness is below 4,000 nits at its maximum level, compared to the Apple Watch Ultra 2’s 3,000-nit screen and the Pixel Watch 3’s 2,000-nit display. However, it was so bright that some parts of the image looked a little washed out.
Samsung Display is not the only company researching small LED wearables. Taiwanese display manufacturer AUO also mentions small LED displays in its clothing website.
There’s also the question of why a brighter display would be useful for a hand, if at all. If only Samsung would incorporate this technology in the future Galaxy Watch — and it’s as good as — I’d like to see how it would sound on a Pro or Ultra model designed for outdoor use. The luminous screen would be easier to see in the sun, and would also make the watch work as a good flashlight in dark places. And there may be surprising or useful uses.
I would also be surprised if the light can drain the battery quickly, and how dark the face of a bright watch can be, especially if you’re wearing it while sleeping.

While we don’t know if a small LED watch is on the horizon, the Samsung Display concept offers a glimpse of what’s possible with the technology. Perhaps it foreshadows what we may see down the line as technologies become cheaper and easier to mass produce.
If Samsung’s smartwatch concept is any sign of things to come, the future of smartwatches could be very bright.
