Real Madrid beat Minera to advance to the Copa del Rey

Real Madrid made light work of fourth-tier Deportivo Minera to progress to the last 16 of the Copa del Rey with a 5-0 away win.

Real took an early lead when Federico Valverde volleyed home in impressive style inside five minutes. Eduardo Camavinga doubled the lead just eight minutes later with a header, while Turkish playmaker Arda Guler added a third goal before the half-hour mark.

Luka Modrić’s superb cross into the right corner after a clever combination with Brahim Diaz brought the crowd to their feet 10 minutes after the break, and Guler sealed the win with his second goal of the evening two minutes from time.

“(Luka) is a gift to football, and even more so to those who can enjoy it up close,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. “Fans, players, coach… for me it’s a great gift. The way he prepares for a match like this, as if it were the final. It is a very important example for our young people.

“The atmosphere was really good for the players. They stayed with the fans to sign shirts and that made the game fantastic.”

Real rotated their squad, with Jude Bellingham an unused substitute, but were still too strong for Cartagena’s Deportiva Minera – currently top of Group 13 in the Segunda Federacion.

Real have won the cup on 20 occasions, most recently in 2023 when Rodrygo’s double sealed a 2-1 victory over Osasuna.
