“Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary said Monday that the concept of the merger of the USA and Canada in one country it is “very interesting”.
“I went to Palm Beach for a couple of days. We talked about Canada on Saturday,” O’Leary said on NewsNation’s “The Hill” Monday evening. “You know, Trump says outrageous things. Everybody knows that. And he’s making policy on social media right now, but it’s causing a lot of…a lot of activity, let’s put it that way.”
“And so, within that idea, there are some really interesting concepts,” he told host Blake Burman. “One of them would be economic union, because … Canadians don’t want to give up their sovereignty, but … what he said was, ‘We are more powerful,’ because economic success is power in the today’s world”.
The investor’s comments follow President-elect Trump’s argument that the US and Canada are merging as a result of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing his resignation.
“If Canada merged with the United States, there would be no tariffs, taxes would be greatly lowered, and they would be TOTALLY insured from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships constantly surrounding them,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Last month, the president-elect he also said that many “Canadians want Canada to become the 51st state” and questioned why the US provides subsidies to the country.
“Can no one answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? It makes no sense!” Trump wrote to Truth Social at the time.
The incoming commander-in-chief has trolled Trudeau in recent weeks, calling him the “Governor” of Canada after their meeting at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. That of the prime minister resignation it comes after the president-elect announced he would attach new rates on Canadian products imported into the US, Trump said would return if the two countries merged.
Trump too recently pointed out in the Panama Canal and Greenland as places that could possibly be included as part of the US
O’Leary, a Canadian himself, told Burman that he suggested to Trump that “‘the Canadians who have fallen … Justin Trudeau, and then a few ministers, I would tell you that you’re wasting your time with them.’ “
The Hill has reached out to Trudeau’s office for comment.
