May Mobility, a technology startup for autonomous vehicles, was unveiled at Cost of CES 2025 the next vehicle in its history: an electric, autonomous minibus developed in collaboration with the European electric bus manufacturer Tecnobus.
Ann Arbor-based Ms. Mobility provides independent on-demand and non-scheduled shuttles to campuses and designated areas. Today its fleet consists of 40 Toyota Sienna minivans that have been modified with May’s software and hardware self-driving stack, and can carry up to eight people. The Tecnobus buses, which May says will join its fleet of Siennas by the end of 2026, can carry up to 30 people, including passengers in wheelchairs.
May Mobility says its Tecnobus minibus is designed for urban transportation, corporate schools, airports, and planning areas, with replaceable batteries that reduce wear and tear. The company also said its upcoming bus is approved for use in Europe and Canada.
TechCrunch asked May Mobility how many of these buses it plans to add to its fleet, and in which markets.
Today, the startup operates shuttle services with a driver behind the wheel in Arlington, Texas; Detroit, Michigan; and Grand Rapids, Minnesota, among other cities. The start is also in Japan, of course Telecom company NTT has agreed to license May’s technology to an AV pilot in Nagoya. May also has deployments to Tokyo and Fukuoka, according to the company.
In addition, May recently introduced a a small driver sent to Ann Arbor to test its power without a human driver in the front seat.
