Google will unveil an AI-powered TV that summarizes news for you at CES 2025

Gone are the days of just watching the news.

Google has unveiled the latest version of its TV operating system at CES 2025 on Monday. It uses the company’s Gemini AI assistant to summarize the big news of the day for you. By asking Gemini to play your “News Brief”, the AI assistant will transcribe online news and YouTube videos posted by trusted news channels, and produce a summary of the day’s events.

Google plans to release these new Gemini capabilities on new and existing Google TV devices by the end of 2025.

The News Brief marks a notable step from Google to the AI news brief, a tricky area for tech companies to step into today. OpenAI, Microsoft, and Mental confusion is currently facing lawsuits from media companies who claim their AI systems have failed to properly license and return the content they use to create AI summaries.

As more and more tech companies try to narrow down AI issues, they have to deal with the backlash that comes from embarrassing issues. Apple’s AI-generated summary failed to understand the BBC’s story, creating a false headline about the sexuality of world tennis champion Rafael Nadal. Google is no stranger to these protests, either; its Gemini AI feature appeared last year and told users to put glue on their pizza.

While Google hid its AI news brief at first, pushing users to Google Search instead, the company is now releasing its data on Gemini. Assistant AI has covered news stories today, but the News Brief appears to be Google’s first dedicated AI story. In particular, News Brief did not reveal where it got the information from, but it does show YouTube-related videos. A Google executive told TechCrunch that it is releasing data not just on YouTube video titles, but on the Internet.

In a presentation with TechCrunch, Google demonstrated how News Brief summarizes the news that has happened Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has submitted his resignation letter. In another example, Gemini summarized the events taking place on Capitol Hill on Monday, including the anniversary of the January 6 Capitol riots.

Google TV news is part of the company’s vision of how Gemini can change the way people use their TVs. Google wants to make TV more connected, and its new TVs will have sensors to detect when users enter the room.

Google also says that users will be able to ask their TVs in natural languages to search for videos, movies, and YouTube videos, and Gemini will also create AI summarization of content.
