Chelsea could make defensive changes this January as Fabrizio Romano has named Marco Guehi and Tomas Araujo as valued players at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking exclusively for CaughtOffside for a video update on the Daily Briefing, Romano explained that Chelsea had internal discussions about their defensive options this January.
Crystal Palace defender Guehi is one name valued by the Blues, while Benfica’s Araujo has also been on their radar since the summer, according to Romano.
Chelsea’s €65m transfer target is expected to move soon
However, both deals look complicated, and another option for Chelsea could be to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace, as they have a release clause that allows them to terminate that deal.
Guehi has shone in the Premier League, so he looks ideal for CFC, but Araujo is another big talent who could have a bright future at the top level in a more competitive league.
Chelsea will still have to decide how much they can spend this winter.
“Chelsea are considering their options for a new reinforcement in the position of central defender this January – there is a real possibility that they will bring in new reinforcements on defense due to injuries,” Romano said.
“Chelsea have dropped Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana, so the Blues are scouting the market… They could look for another centre-back, a player for the present and the future.
“The player they love at Chelsea is Marc Guehi – it could be a possibility that Chelsea have already discussed and considered internally.
“However, from what I’ve been told, it’s still not an easy deal to do as it could be expensive and Chelsea still have to decide internally how much they want to spend to cover the position.
“Certainly, Guehi is valued and he has 18 months left on his contract at Crystal Palace, so let’s see what Chelsea decide to do.
“Tomas Araujo at Benfica is another player valued at Chelsea – they already wanted him last summer.
“But for now Benfica still does not open the door to the general exit. Let’s see if the situation changes, but at the moment I don’t know of any news about Araujo.”
