Apple Intelligence, the product it is most famous for very bad A summary of documents and information, and quietly taking up your unused storage space. Like featured by 9to5MacApple Intelligence has gone from requiring 4GB of available storage at launch in September 2024 to 7GB just four months later – nearly doubling the amount of space it takes up on the device.
A jump in storage needs was first seen by the introduction of iOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2which was first released to the public in early December and expanded on the first batch of Apple Intelligence that started with iOS 18.1 and Sequoia 15.1. The December update introduced two AI-generated features: Photo Gallery, which creates images based on user preferences, and Genmoji, which allows users to create their own emoji.
One of the reasons this requires more space is that Apple Intelligence uses device processing, so the models that support the feature must be stored on the device. That’s why only the devices have the company’s chipsets, perhaps M1 or A17 or higher, get a feature – while other chipsets can handle processing, Apple wants its AI performance to run as smoothly as possible.
While on-device processing provides some privacy (although, surprisingly, Apple is still looking at your photos and other data to train its AI), it also means that every time a new Apple Intelligence product is released, your storage space will decrease. The company is plans to give Siri an AI upgrade Soon, and Apple will continue to lean on AI to improve the operating system in the future, so expect it to fill up your storage space in the future.
What makes Apple Intelligence even worse is that it’s close no one is really entertained about using this. Earlier this year, a survey conducted by SellCell found that 73% of iPhone owners who tested Apple Intelligence said it added “useless value” to their phones.
Maybe that will change as Apple brings out new things that people want to do with it, but it will be interesting to see if the sales prove it.
