Despite the late excitement, it could not overshadow a challenging day for India, who took a brave decision to leave out captain Rohit Sharma in the crucial Test and won the toss but were bowled out for just 185. Needing a win in the final U Test at the SCG to level the series and defending the trophy, India found themselves up against Scott Boland, who was the main obstacle in their way.

The Victorian seamer finished with figures of 4-31, dismissing key Indian players such as Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswaland Nitish Kumar Reddy. Australia ended the first day at 9/1, still trailing by 176 runs at stumps.
