Valencia vs Real Madrid: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Real Madrid return from their winter break on Friday night when they travel to Valencia in La Liga.

Los Blancos have been out of action since their 4-2 win over Sevilla before Christmas, but the home side are back at the Mestalla. This meeting was postponed back in November after fatal flooding in the Valencia region, but was postponed to Friday night.

Madrid know the importance of a win at Valencia, with the three points lifting them above local rivals Atletico Madrid into first place. It also marks the start of three games in seven days, with Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana matches in quick succession.

Los Che will not be delighted by the proposal of a visit to Madrid. Former West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan takes charge of his first game with 19th-placed Valencia, winless in their previous five La Liga games.

Corberan was greeted by a full treatment room upon his arrival at Valencia, with Mouctar Diakhaby, Jose Gaya and Thierry Correia missing in defence. The latter will be absent until the end of the campaign.

Fran Perez and Rafa Mir are doubtful, and star goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili could also miss out again. The Georgian has not played since the beginning of December and is struggling with a thigh injury.

Influential midfielder Pepel will be unavailable due to suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against Deportivo Alaves before the winter break.

Predicted lineup of Valencia against Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): Dimitrievsky; Foulquier, Mosquera, Gasiorowski, Rioja; Barrenechea, Guerra; Canos, Almeida, Lopez; heavy.

Vinicius Junior

Carlo Ancelotti is still without three key defenders heading into Friday’s clash and strengthening the backline is likely to be a priority if any January signings are to be made. Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao are out of season, doc David Alaba is unlikely to return until the end of the month after a long break due to injury.

Vinicius Junior will return to the starting line-up after missing the win over Sevilla due to suspension, and will be joined by Rodrygo and Kylian Mbappe in the XI. The latter is starting to turn around after a difficult start in Spain.

Aurelien Tchouameni is likely to replace the central defender again after injuries, and Eduardo Camavinga will step into defensive midfield. Fran Garcia could also start in place of the out-of-form Ferlando Mendy at left-back.

Predicted line-up of Real Madrid against Valencia (4-3-3): Courteous; Vazquez, Tchouameni, Rudiger, Garcia; Valverde, Camavinga, Bellingham; Rodrygo, Mbappe, Vinicius.

Corberan will be hoping to build on his current performance in Valencia, but injuries and a general lack of quality in key areas mean another defeat is on the cards this Friday. The hosts have won just two games in La Liga – the fewest of any team in the division – and have picked up just nine points from eight home games.

Madrid have been inconsistent on the road this season, winning four, drawing four and losing one in nine games. However, with the plethora of attacking options at their disposal, they should have enough firepower to convincingly beat Valencia.

Prediction: Valencia 1-3 Real Madrid
