Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has come under extensive scrutiny and things are not going his way. The top batsman has been dropped from the XI for the ongoing fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, which is being held at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.
Rohit Sharma has been dropped from the team due to his poor return with the bat and this has fueled much speculation about his future in all formats. Now, in a drastic turn of events, reports in MyKhel suggest something that would not be good news for the captain.
According to reports, it is learned that Rohit Sharma has been dropped from Tests and the BCCI has already started exploring leadership options in ODI cricket as well. Reports add that if his role as captain in the 50-over format comes under the scanner, then he will be relieved of his captaincy duties.
It is learned that Hardik Pandya will be given the leading role in the ODIs. The BCCI sees the all-rounder as a potential candidate to lead India’s national cricket team in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy if the current captain is put to the test of his leadership.
Speaking to MyKhel Now, a BCCI source said, “Hardik has a knack for leading in high-pressure situations and his experience as an all-rounder and leader makes him an ideal choice for an ICC tournament like the Champions Trophy.”
There is no way T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav would take over in ODIs as well due to his poor track record. There are chances that Shubman Gill, who is the vice-captain of the team, could also be considered for the role.
But a BCCI source claimed that Shubman Gill needs time to develop and also spoke about why Suryakumar Yadav could not take charge. He added that Hardik Pandya remains the most balanced option to lead India in ODIs. He added:
“Gill needs more grooming to mature into a leader and SKY’s ODI performances have not been convincing enough. Hardik remains the most balanced option to lead India in ODIs if Rohit is unavailable.”
After canceling the Test, Rohit Sharma’s first ODI assignment will be the series against the England national cricket team. After that, the Indian cricket team will play in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and it remains to be seen whether he will captain the team or not.
Rohit Sharma recently led the Indian National Cricket Team to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and it will be a big deal if they replace him as captain in ODIs as well.
