Prograis: Haney needs a tune-up before the rematch against Garcia

Regis Prograis thinks Devin Haney isn’t washed up, but says he won’t beat Ryan Garcia. He recommends that Haney not rematch Kingry unless it’s fair “trying to cash in.”

It would be crazy for Devin to fight Garcia again without at least one tweak to rebuild and see where he is at neurological. Kingry had Haney all over him, dropping him six times in the fight last April, though the referee only counted three. The popular Southern Californian hurt Devin whenever he wanted, and it looked too easy.

Adjustment required

If Dev goes against the soft puncher, he’ll find out if he can still land a decent headshot without hitting the deck face first. He can regain some of the confidence he may have lost that night against Garcia at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Haney’s decision to sit out a year during Ryan’s suspension has many fans believing that he is waiting for him before he fights again. Is Devin (31-0, 15 KO) waiting for Garcia to get that lucrative rematch or does he want time off to rest after the loss he suffered in his 12-round majority decision loss on April 20?

If there is Haney’s fear about whether he can handle being hit even by a scribe, it makes sense for him to remain inactive and wait for Kingry’s one-year suspension to end in April. The last thing Devin needs is to get kicked out by some obscure ham & egger and lose a rematch against Garcia for good.

“He’s not hit, but I don’t think he’ll beat Ryan,” Regis told Prograis YSM Sports media about Devin Haney fighting in a rematch against Ryan Garcia. “Rayan called him out, and that will always be there. No matter what Bill says, it will always be in the back of his mind. ‘Damn, he really beat me.’

“I don’t think they are, and I don’t think they should fight Ryan next time. I think they should make an adjustment to see, and see how he (Haney) works and then go from there. The only way they would do that (Ryan’s next fight) is if they try to cash in and get a crazy amount of money,” Prograis said.
