Welcome to 2025. Goodbye to yesterday and the biggest losers in tech. Picking our favorite villains in 2024 was difficult when it wasn’t a great time for technology. With the frustration of social media, the will-they-or-won’t-they dance to ban TikTok in the US and the unedited and deep, it sounds loud. Is it a slop internet? Are you tired? Is AI talking to AIs about AIs? Amidst all of this, there’s the demise of previous interfaces, Intel’s major struggles to transform its economy, and, ugh, their AI assistants.

It’s the start of a new year, and new works of art have entered the public domain. Today, many materials copyrighted in 1929 and sound recordings dating back to 1924 are fair game for adaptation, reuse, copying and sharing. Several directors started their first works with sound, such as Alfred Hitchcock Blackmail and Cecil B. DeMille’s Dynamite. 1929 was also the year Walt Disney directed the famous Skeleton Dance picture by Ub Iwerks, and when Mickey Mouse starred in his first talkie.
