After a massive New Year’s blackout, nearly all power in Puerto Rico has been restored, though the island is also expected to face power shortages later Thursday .
This is what LUMA, the company that manages the island’s electricity, said 99 percent of its customers had electricity as of Thursday morning. As of Tuesday night, 90 percent of the utility’s 1.47 million customers in Puerto Rico were without power.
While power was mostly restored as of Thursday morning, so was LUMA said in a post on social platform X which predicts there will be a power outage Thursday afternoon that will cause temporary rotating outages. He urged customers to conserve energy.
The company is still investigating the cause of Tuesday’s outage, which it plunged more than 1 million people into darkness New Year’s Eve.
The power outages are the latest in a series of long standing power issues faced by Puerto Rico. The US territory has struggled with its power grid since it was severely damaged in 2017’s Hurricane Maria.
