A Cyber truck explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas was caused by fireworks mortars and camping fuel canisters, according to investigators.
The explosion killed one person inside the vehicle and injured at least seven people nearby.
“Once the fire has been extinguished through the suppression efforts of the fire department, you will see some of the evidence in the back of the vehicle,” Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill told reporters during a Wednesday press conference.
“So they’re gasoline cans. They’re camping fuel cans and big firework mortars. But I’d also like you to pay attention in this video,” he said, describing the objects shown in the footage.
“As you can see it looks like the exterior of this truck is completely intact as it sits there,” McMahill continued. “The fact that it was a Cybertruck really limited the damage that took place inside the apartment because it had most of the explosions. get in the truck and get out.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk also confirmed these reports later in the day.
“We have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and is unrelated to the vehicle itself,” Musk wrote later Wednesday in a post on social platform X.
“All telemetry from the vehicle was positive at the time of the explosion,” he added.
Authorities quickly responded to the emergency outside the hotel, where they found a body inside the truck, which was as rented rented through the Turo app.
McMahill began investigating the explosion as a terrorist attack data provided by Musk.
“I have to specifically thank Elon Musk,” McMahill told reporters.
“It gave us a lot of additional information about how the vehicle was locked after it exploded,” he added.
Musk, who is preparing work closely with President-elect Trump throughout his administration entering as a co-leader again Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), used Tesla charging stations to track the driver’s movement in the moments before detonation. He said the high-tech vehicle contained the blast, limiting damage to surrounding areas.
“Cybertruck contained the blast and directed the blast upwards. Not even the glass doors to the lobby were broken,” Musk wrote to X Wednesday evening
Investigators have not currently named a suspect in part because of uncertainty over the identity of the culprit, who may have been the same person who died.
“What I will update, I am very aware that a name has already been reported in the media. I will not confirm a name to you as I sit today because I cannot do so with 100% certainty of who the individual is,” McMahill said during the news conference.
He added that the truck was likely rented in Colorado and traveled “up and down Las Vegas Boulevard before immediately going into Trump Towers.”
