Irfan Pathan issues open statement after Gautam Gambhir’s explosive dressing room comments leaked

Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has reacted to reports of a dressing room clash following the team’s defeat in the fourth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series. Irfan Pathan criticized the leak of dressing room issues, disapproving of bringing such internal issues to the public.

Reports of internal tensions in the Indian dressing room emerged on New Year’s Day. Head coach Gautam Gambhir was furious with the team’s performance, especially after the second innings collapse. Gambhir expressed his frustration, telling the players, “bahut ho gaya” (I’ve had enough).

Head coach Gautam Gambhir is reportedly furious with the team’s performance

According to The Indian Express, Gambhir criticized the players for prioritizing their “natural game” instead of adapting to the situation. The report adds that he did not single out a single person. After giving the team freedom over the past six months, Gambhir has reportedly announced a tougher approach.

The India coach warned that players who did not want to follow his strategies would risk being dropped from the team. The report also mentions disagreements between selector Gambhir and the BCCI, as well as captain Rohit Sharma, which added to the tension.

What happens in the dressing room… – Irfan Pathan

Irfan Pathan shared a cryptic message on his social media account regarding the recent leaked reports of the team’s internal issues. Pathan said that what happens in the dressing room should stay in the dressing room.

“What happens in the dressing room, stays in the dressing room!” Irfan Pathan posted on X (formerly Twitter).

How the locker room talk was leaked to the media – Shreevats Goswami

Shreevats Goswami and WV Raman criticized the leakage of locker room discussions. Goswami condemned the act, terming it unacceptable. Raman questioned how internal discussions were leaked to the media and stressed the importance of allowing players to concentrate on their jobs during such a crucial period.

“How did locker room talk get leaked to the media? This is just not on!” Goswami wrote.

“#Teamindia has a chance to pull off #BGT. So they should be allowed to get on with their jobs. This is not the time to douse selective leaks and fuel fires. My humble opinion,” added Raman, who was interviewed for the post of India’s head coach this year, which eventually went to Gambhir.

“A subtle spin has started to blame the selectors for the unfavorable results! That is, if the reports are to be believed…” Raman added.

India’s loss to Australia in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne dented their World Test Championship (WTC) hopes. To stay in the competition, India must win the Sydney Test. However, their chances will still depend on Australia’s performance in the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

An Australian Test win would eliminate India’s chances there. A loss or draw in Sydney would also mean surrendering the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which India held for 10 years, with their last series defeat coming on the tour of Australia in 2014-15.
