Former Indian captain and one of cricket’s most celebrated icons, MS Dhoni, recently shared his thoughts on public relations and social media, giving valuable advice to the younger generation. Known for keeping a low profile, Dhoni revealed that he never felt the need to chase fame or followers.
In the modern age, many cricketers are obsessed with building their social media presence, but the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman firmly believes that a good cricket ranking is the best PR anyone can have.
He noted that success on the field speaks louder than any number of posts or followers. The former Indian captain revealed that he had different managers throughout his career, and even though they pushed PR, he ignored them, as he always believed in one philosophy that his game should be enough to create a buzz among the fans.
MS Dhoni said on Eurogrip Tires’ YouTube channel: “I’ve had different managers throughout and they’ve all told me, You should do a bit of PR, build this, build that. So, I looked at all my different managers and got the same answer. You know, if I play good cricket, I don’t need a PR. It becomes very difficult to wear something all the time. So I’m always like, you know, if I have something, I’ll put it on. If I don’t have anything, I won’t put it on. So it also takes away that stress.”

MS Dhoni, the only winner of all ICC trophies as a captain, stressed that if the players focus on excelling at their job within 22 yards, everything else will fall into place. He believes that the pressure of maintaining a certain image on social networks can be enormous, and that it is completely necessary.
He noted, “I’m not concerned about who has how many followers or who’s doing what, because I know that if I take care of cricket, everything else will take care of itself. If you’re really good at what you’re doing, why do you need all these great answers?”
The iconic cricketer also took a subtle dig at those players who are more concerned about their PR than their performance. He pointed out that social networks can easily distract players, especially when they start caring too much about likes, comments and opinions.
He further explained, “I’m not saying it’s a bad thing; people shouldn’t do that, but at the same time, if it’s not you, then don’t do it. In terms of that, if you’re distracted by it, if you feel, if you’re among the people reading the comments or the responses, and then if there’s certain bad things that are going to be part of it, then you feel bad.”
Dhoni also emphasized that social media may not be the way to go for those affected by the negative comments, advising the younger generation to stay true to themselves, focus on their craft and let the results speak for themselves, as in the end, real success should never filter.
He signed off by saying, “So if you know this is happening, know it’s not the right thing for you. So, you know, be wise about whether it’s helping you or, you know, dragging you down. So if you get the right answer, do the right thing.”
