Jermell Charlo vs. The New 154lb Kings: Can He Survive?

Jermall Charlo is back in the gym, training for his comeback to prepare for his return to the ring in 2025.

The former undisputed junior middleweight champion, Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs), has been resting for the past 15 months after losing to IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO 168-lb champion Canelo Alvarez in 12 rounds. by a unanimous decision not to order on September 30, 2023.

Fans are joking on social media that the 34-year-old Charlo spent the estimated $20 million he received on the Canelo fight. Charlo didn’t blow his earnings total; he made the right decision to continue his career. Jermell can make a lot of money if he fights on one of Turki Al-Shiek’s cards in Riyadh.

The 154lb division has gotten a lot better in the last year since Charlo has held four belts in that weight class, and it’s questionable whether he can beat any of the top fighters now. He’s been out too long, and there are more talented guys at the top now than when Jermell held the belts.

It would be interesting for fans to see Al-Shiekh offer Jermello a fight against one of these talents:

– Israel Madrimov
– Serhii Bohachuk
– Vergil Ortiz Jr.
– Charles Conwell
– Bakhram Murtazaliev
– Sebastian Fundora
– Terence Crawford
– Xander Zayas
– Yoeniz Tellaz
– Tim Tszyu

If you’re Turkish, it would be easiest to fight Jermell against IBF champion Murtazaliev. Crawford will not agree to fight Charlo unless he is offered big money, possibly more than what he was paid for the August 3 fight against Madrimov.

Most of those fighters would beat the version of Jermello who lost to Canelo and fought Brian Castano and Tony Harrison. Again, the 154 lb division has changed and gotten a lot better. Charlo will turn 35 on May 19, which is not young for any weight class.

If Charlo comes back, he needs to stay active instead of fighting once and then disappearing for a year. He has fought on an annual basis since 2020. He did not fight in 2024, resting after taking a big payday against Canelo.
