British number two Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from her first round match against Robin Montgomery at the Auckland Open.
World number 56 Raducanu, who has reached the last 16 in the last two editions of the tournament, said she “did her best to be ready” after pulling out.
“I love Auckland and the fans here, but unfortunately I’ve picked up a problem and won’t be ready in time,” added the 2021 US Open winner.
Australian Open 2025: Will Raducana play?
Raducan’s next match is now almost certain at the Australian Open, which starts on January 12, with the women’s final on January 25.
Her ranking means she will not be seeded at this year’s first Grand Slam, where she will appear for the fourth time in a row.
The 22-year-old has been knocked out in the second round in each of those three previous campaigns. Her only run past the second round at a major since her triumph in New York was a fourth-round appearance at the 2024 Wimbledon.

Now working with conditioning coach Yutaka Nakamura, Raducanu’s main concern may be a lack of competitive build-up after playing just three games since spraining ligaments in her foot in September.
All three events ended with Great Britain victories in the Billie Jean King Cup final, and Raducanu also suffered a first-round defeat at the 2024 US Open that month to current world number 81 Sofia Kenin.
Raducanu returned to the tour last January after an eight-month absence that included surgeries on both wrists and her left ankle.
She withdrew from the Miami Open in March due to lower back pain, saying she “didn’t want to risk anything happening.”
Auckland Open: Burrage through
The 24th world tennis player Katie Boulter is the British number one, while the British woman is present at the Auckland Open in the form of Jodie Burrage.
The seventh British and 179th tennis player in the world lost in the qualifiers, but was given a place in the main draw after Belgium’s Elise Mertens was injured.
Burrage capitalized with a 6-3 6-3 win over wildcard New Zealand Vivian Yang, adding that her appearance came as a surprise at short notice on a “crazy day”.
