Ayush Mhatre sets the record for the youngest player in List A cricket

Mumbai’s Ayush Mhatre etched his name in the history books on Tuesday, becoming the youngest player to score more than 150 runs in List A cricket. The 17-year-old boy wonder achieved this feat during Vijay Hazare Trophy clash against Nagaland, surpassing the previous record set by an Indian batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal.

At just 17 years and 168 days, Mhatre surpassed Jaiswal’s tally of 17 years and 291 days. Back in 2019, Jaiswal set a record by playing for Mumbai against Jharkhand. Mhatre’s blistering 181 off just 117 balls including 15 fours and 11 towering sixes pushed Mumbai to a daunting total of 403 for seven in 50 overs.

A rising star from Virar

Born and brought up in Mumbai’s Virar suburb, Mhatre has been a revelation since making his debut for the local giants earlier this season. His consistent performances across formats have made him a mainstay of the team.

He was part of the Irani Cup-winning Mumbai team that ended a 27-year drought with a win over Rest of India in October. On his Ranji Trophy debut, Mhatre showed his potential with a steady 52 off 71 balls, though Mumbai fell short against Baroda in the first match.

Building momentum in domestic cricket

Mhatre’s season was a mixture of brilliance and resilience. After his debut, he played a match-winning 176 against Maharashtra, an innings laced with 22 fours and four sixes. Mumbai cruised to a nine-wicket victory thanks to his heroics.

Although he had quieter spells against Tripura and Odisha, Mhatre bounced back with a second first-class century against Services, scoring 116 runs off 149 balls. This knock cemented his position as one of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket.

She shines on the international stage

Mhatre’s form earned him a place in the Indian U-19 squad for Asian Cup. He contributed fifties against Japan and the UAE before falling short in the final, where India lost to Bangladesh. His performances have shown his ability to handle the pressure on the international stage.

After missing Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title triumph, Mhatre returned to the Vijay Hazare Trophy in style. He smashed a fluent 78 in a high-scoring encounter against Karnataka, further highlighting his abilities in the 50-over format.
