Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma announce retirement after BGT 2024-25? Ravi Shastri has a big claim

Indian senior cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been going through turbulent times with the bat recently. Both the players have long served in Indian cricket but have struggled for runs in recent Tests.

In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, both found it difficult to get going. They were expected to fire in the big occasion of the Boxing Day Test, but they couldn’t trouble the shooters much here either.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was asked about the future of these two talismanic cricketers after their failures in Melbourne. While Shastri maintained that Kohli will continue to play, he made a shocking claim about Rohit Sharma’s future.

Ravi Shastri makes a shocking claim about the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

During a discussion on Star Sports after the end of the first session on the fifth day, Ravi Shastri expects Virat Kohli to play for a few more years but feels time is up for India captain Rohit Sharma.

Shastri feels that Rohit is struggling with his footwork and is late with the ball leading to his dismissal. He also praised the Australian team for their determination to win this series.

“No, I think Virat Kohli will play. Virat will play for a while, forget how he came out today. I think he will play for another 3 or 4 years. As far as Rohit (Sharma) is concerned, that’s a decision,” Shastri said during the break for lunch.

“At the top of the order, his footwork isn’t the same. Probably, sometimes, he’s a bit late in meeting the ball. So that’s his decision at the end of the series. But, having said that, this Australian team wants it badly,” he added.

Ravi Shastri reveals what’s bothering Rohit Sharma

Ravi Shastri also revealed the technicalities plaguing Rohit Sharma. According to him, Rohit is struggling with his footwork and playing away from his body.

“The determination in his eyes was visible even as he was batting yesterday. He wasn’t going to give it away. This is the way of the dismissal. Rohit Sharma, at best, that front foot would have been closer to the height of the ball,” observed Shastri.

“There’s a trigger and that’s when the front leg stays angled. The club goes towards the ball, so you play away from the body,” he added.

Rohit Sharma initially looked solid with the bat and looked to play long innings. However, he was dismissed while trying to play an aggressive shot and ended up being bowled by Australian captain Pat Cummins.

Rohit Sharma initially looked solid with the bat and looked to play long innings. However, he was dismissed while trying to play an aggressive shot and ended up being bowled by Australian captain Pat Cummins.

Pat Cummins dismissed Rohit Sharma for just 9 off 40 balls on day five. Despite looking solid early on, he perished while trying to play an aggressive shot and was caught by Mitchell Marsh at gully.

Rohit has been in poor form with the bat throughout the series. He has scored just 31 runs in five Test innings at an average of 6.20 so far. There has been talk of his retirement and it is likely that he will refer to it soon.

On the other hand, Virat Kohli is also having a bad run with the bat. Apart from the century in Perth, he hasn’t looked his best. Kohli scored 167 runs in seven innings at an average of 27.83.
