Documents and offices of the US Treasury Department were found during the cyberattack, The New York Times reports. The attack was linked to a “Chinese state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat actor” and was described as “a major cyber security incident.”
According to the letter The Treasury Department shared with lawmakers (via TechCrunch), US authorities were alerted to this issue on December 8, when BeyondTrust, a third-party software company, shared that the security key used to provide technical support was used to access the workplace and anonymous documents.
The Treasury Department said it was working with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI to understand the extent of the breach, but did not share how long the files and workstations were accessed or what was discovered.
