As 2024 draws to a close, we’ve challenged Sky Sports Rugby League pundits to share their highlights, their biggest shocks and look forward to the new Super League season…
Favorite moment from the 2024 season?
“Respect” was sung by the large Hull KR crowd ahead of the start of the semi-final against Warrington. The atmosphere was full of a range of emotions.
The Robins have been a revelation this year, reaching all the way to the grand final before being given a harsh reminder of what sustained excellence looks like.
The shock of the 2024 season?
The club from the capital pulled off, without a doubt, the shock of the season. The Catalans’ season was, shall we say, 50/50 at best in 2024, but not many would have predicted their demise in Round 20 away to London Broncos. A proud day for David and the Hughes family.
What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
Watching Bevan French. Once upon a time it would have been a reference to the Wire wingman, one of the greatest the game has ever seen. Now it is the biggest entertainer of the Super League on the field. French might just be the most electrifying rugby player of any code in the world right now.
Favorite moment from the 2024 season?
Brian Carney pitches to Rod Stewart instead of Rod Studd. We couldn’t stop laughing. I actually got excited that Rod Stewart might be turning to sports broadcasting late in his career. But no, it was a small but big mistake.
The shock of the 2024 season?
Probably Hull FC, knowing that without further investment the smart move is to simply throw in the towel for 2024. They cut players and costs, Adam Pearson took cover and waited for help in the form of the Myler family connections.
I guess without the resources, Pearson should be respected for doing the right thing by not going into financial trouble.
He would absolutely be under the Hull FC fans torch. The shock of 2024 was the realization that winning matches no longer mattered so much. It matters, but not as much as it used to be.
What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
The growth of Warrington under Sam Burgess, the evolution of St Helens you think has to come, the return of a new great Wakefield Trinity, the Robins getting their name on the trophy and someone other than Wigan lifting the trophy.
Liam Farrell is out for three months with a repetitive stress shoulder injury caused by the movement of lifting the trophy…
Favorite moment from the 2024 season?
Bittersweet for me but the Rob Burrow game was an amazing tribute to a magnificent man and his entire rugby family, MND and of course his immediate family who are role models to ourselves.
Although we all know that day will come, it was extremely sad, but encouraging at the same time. The broadcast was another example of what Sky and sport can achieve when they have a common goal and collaboration happens.
My friend would have been delighted with the warm-up game, the team’s performance and the recognition at the end as we said our goodbyes.
The shock of the 2024 season?
Hull FC and how disappointing they were from start to finish. They actually got worse!
What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
I’m a big fan of the captain’s challenge. It will bring an extra element to the game and give us all a lot more to discuss and debate – when to use it, who uses it and who shouldn’t is often as much fun as anything else.
Rugby league has always been revolutionary in its approach so we’ll see how it goes. Who knows, maybe we’ll see it accepted by other sports in this country.
Favorite moment from the 2024 season?
The “moment” would be Bevan French’s try against Leigh in the 59th minute of the semi-final.
As someone who has played the game for 20 years, I never tire of seeing unique moments of genius, prophetic vision and athletic mastery.
The shock of the 2024 season?
The revelation that 60 per cent of Hull KR fans walk to the stadium highlights the deep-rooted community spirit that surrounds the game. Craven Park stands out as perhaps the only place where Craven Street could have really flourished and where fans would have produced such lively 80s pop cult performances from groups like Erasure. Absolutely fantastic.
What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
Assessing whether Super League’s all-time leading scorer Ryan Hall, paired with the even better strike rate of NRL’s Maika Sivo, can help pull Leeds Rhinos out of the abyss.
Favorite moment from the 2024 season?
It has to be like that in the Super League Ryan Hall’s record breaking attempt at home and in the women’s competition, it was Georgie Hetherington who was named the Woman of Steel.
The shock of the 2024 season?
In the men’s competition, it would Salford Red Devils performances given the buzz surrounding the club at the start of the season with player departures.
I loved it in the women’s Barrow’s results in their first year in Super League.
What are you most looking forward to in 2025?
England v Australia Ashes on home soil will be great, as will the arrival of Jared Waere-Hargreaves at Hull KR.
The women’s competition will then see England take on Australia in Las Vegas, with Wigan Warriors Women looking to build on their impressive rise in 2024.
