I was on the fence Astral Chain from the day the first trailer came out to a few hours into my playing. It all felt routine, almost a by-the-numbers translation of an action game. I shouldn’t have worried too much, as it is one of the first titles from PlatinumGames, the developer behind the Bayonetta series, in recent years.
In the future where the world is constantly attacked by creatures that exist on another plane of existence, you play as a soldier in a special forces unit that fights against this threat. The gameplay is that you can transform these creatures into armies that you use in battle. The experience plays with you and controlling your character and the Legion at the same time to deal with waves of hordes and bigger, harder enemies. As well as fighting, you will use your Legion(s) to solve crimes and traverse the territories.
Astral Chain sticking more to the cycle of police work, putting puzzles and fighting – a little too much, if I argue – and the game is divided into cases that act as themes. The story starts off well enough but quickly veers into a variety of different anime genres, including twists and arcs ripped from popular shows and movies. However, the minute-by-minute gameplay is enough to keep you engaged with the massive 20-hour or so campaign and end-game content.
They do Astral Chain reach the top of Next: Automata? No, no, but his battle is a place that often surpasses the game, which is said to be my favorite of this generation. Often found for under $50 these days, it’s well worth your while.
